The Nigerian Army has reiterated its dedication to ongoing training and skill enhancement for its personnel to effectively address the evolving security challenges across the nation.
Commander of the 4 Special Forces Command in Doma, Nasarawa State, Major General Hilary Nzan, stated this during the opening ceremony of the Inter-Brigade Combat Proficiency Competition, which kicked off at the Command’s headquarters.
The week-long exercise has attracted troops from battalions across Benue, Bauchi, and the Federal Capital Territory, Abuja. It is aimed at sharpening soldiers’ operational skills and improving their competence for more result-driven operations nationwide.
Declaring the competition open, Major General Nzan, represented by the Chief of Staff, Brigadier General Murtala Abu, said the Nigerian Army has continued to adopt new operational strategies to respond swiftly to security threats, including banditry, insurgency, and herdsmen attacks, in line with global best practices.
“This competition plays a vital role in preparing us to meet emerging security challenges head-on,” he said. “Beyond testing proficiency, it also fosters healthy rivalry, unity, and esprit de corps among officers across different formations and units.”
Also speaking, the Commander of the 401 Battalion in Makurdi, Colonel Kolawole Bukoye, highlighted the Army’s renewed commitment to proactive measures, noting that troops are now adopting more offensive operations rather than remaining on the defensive.
“Events to be competed for during this exercise include a 10-kilometre race, physical fitness and obstacle crossing, weapon handling, and combat swimming,” he explained.
Prizes will be awarded to outstanding participants at the end of the competition.
Formations participating in the exercise include the 4 Special Forces Command Garrison, the 401 Special Forces Brigade, as well as the 167 and 137 Battalions.
The high point of the opening ceremony was the administration of an oath to both participants and judges to ensure discipline, fairness, and impartiality throughout the competition.
