Governor Caleb Mutfwang has expressed worry over the increased level of arms and ammunition in the possession of non-state actors in the country.
The Governor gave the indication when he received the Zonal Director of the National Center for the Control of Small Arms and Light Weapons and his team on a courtesy visit at the Courtesy Call Room, Government House, Little Rayfield, Jos.
The National Centre for the Control of Small Arms and Light Weapons, NCCSALW, is a Nigerian government agency established to address the proliferation of small arms and light weapons in the country.
The center was approved by President Muhammadu Buhari in May 2021, replacing the defunct Presidential Committee on Small Arms and Light Weapons.
Governor Caleb Mutfwang, while welcoming the team to the State, identified the inability of security agencies to checkmate and monitor the vast expanse of territorial space across the country as a major factor affecting the proliferation of such arms and ammunition.
Governor Mutfwang also attributed the closure of one of the identified motor packs in the State to security reports indicating it as a transit camp to the supply of such small arms and ammunition.
Earlier, Zonal Director of the National Centre for the Control of Small Arms and Weapons, Abdul Eneche, said the team was in the State for a familiarization and sensitization exercise while giving a brief on the establishment of the centre.
Eneche also concurred with fact that the present security situation bedeviling the country was a result of the proliferation of small arms and light weapons, regretted the situation where dialogue, which used to serve as a solution to most conflicts, has now been relegated to the background.
The center is also geared towards promoting peace and security, reducing armed violence, and advancing sustainable development by controlling the proliferation of small arms and light weapons.
