Over one thousand students from the 13 local government areas of Nasarawa State have benefitted from scholarship grants facilitated by the federal lawmaker representing Doma, Keana, and Obi Federal Constituency, Hon. Abubakar Hassan Nalaraba.
Speaking during the disbursement of the funds to the beneficiaries in Lafia, Alhaji Nalaraba said the initiative was in response to the prevailing economic hardship in the country.
He explained that each beneficiary had already received ₦100,000, making the total disbursement ₦100 million. According to him, the support is designed to ease the financial burden of indigent students and enable them to focus on their studies.
“The grants have taken care of their tuition fees by supporting them with ₦100,000 each, which can cover at least one full academic session in the university. We are here to disburse this support to 1,000 students across the Nasarawa southern zone,” he stated.
The lawmaker assured that the scholarship scheme, alongside other empowerment programmes, would be sustained to improve the welfare of the people.
In his remarks, a paramount traditional ruler, the Aren Eggon, Justice Ahmed Ubangari (Rtd), commended Alhaji Nalaraba for the gesture and urged the beneficiaries to make judicious use of the scholarship opportunity.
Similarly, the Chairman of the Scholarship Grants Committee, Prof. Amirikpa Oyigbenu, noted that the beneficiaries were carefully selected across the three senatorial districts and various wards of the state.
“We reached out to the wards and villages to identify indigent and underprivileged children whose parents cannot afford to pay tuition fees,” he explained.
Some of the beneficiaries, including Abimiku Salvation David and Sufyanu Bushrat Mamman, expressed joy and gratitude for the support, saying the intervention came at a critical time when they were struggling to continue their education.
