Federal Government interventions such as the Tertiary Education Trust Fund, TETFund and the Nigerian Education Loan Fund, NELFUND have been described as lifelines for the nation’s education sector.
The Vice Chancellor of the University of Ilorin, Prof. Wahab Egbewole, stated this at a news conference to mark the university’s 40th Convocation Ceremonies.
Egbewole noted that NELFUND, in particular, has ensured that no student will drop out of school as a result of financial challenges.
“An intervention fund of Two billion, five hundred and sixty million, five hundred and sixty-two thousand, three hundred and sixty two Naira, sixty kobo( 2, 560, 562, 362.66) was allocated to the University by TETFund for the year 2025 and this covers eleven area including physical infrastructure/ programme upgrade, Academic Staff Training, ICT support, entrepreneurship, career services among others, ” he explained.
He explained that, in the year under review, the institution received an intervention fund of over Two billion Naira through TETFund, covering physical infrastructure upgrades, academic staff training, ICT support, entrepreneurship, and career services, among others.
The Vice Chancellor listed the university’s areas of achievement to include research, academic quality, infrastructure development, digital transformation, student support, and community development.
Egbewole announced that for the 2024/2025 academic session, a total of Eleven thousand, eight hundred and eighty six (11, 886) students will be graduating, with Three hundred and sixteen of them earning First Class degrees in their various disciplines.
“In the First Degree/ Diploma category we have 316 First Class, 4120 Second Class (Upper Division), 5939 Second Class (Lower Division), 1078 Third Class and 11 Pass,” he stated.
He, however, identified challenges facing the university to include resource constraints and bureaucratic bottlenecks, while calling for the support of stakeholders.
On the lingering disagreement between the Federal Government and the Academic Staff Union of Universities, ASUU the University of Ilorin Vice Chancellor emphasized the need for continuous dialogue to achieve a resolution that would benefit all parties, especially students who are most affected.
