The Nigeria Police Force has foiled an attempted attack on the Obajana Operational Base in Kogi State and arrested several suspected criminal elements.
The Police Public Relations Officer, CSP William Aya, in a statement, said the incident followed a major clearance operation carried out on January 10, 2026, by the Police, with support from the Nigeria Police Force Air Wing.
It said the operation involved precision airstrikes on identified flashpoints, hideouts and assembly points used by bandits and other criminal groups across parts of Kogi State.
According to the statement, the success of the operation was believed to have provoked sleeper cells of the criminals, who in retaliation attempted to attack police assets and facilities at the Obajana Operational Base.
The statement said the attack was, however, swiftly repelled by police operatives on duty, who carried out a coordinated counter-operation that neutralised and drove back the assailants.
It said several suspects were arrested during the exchange, many of whom sustained gunshot injuries, while efforts are ongoing to track down other fleeing suspects and determine the source and motive behind the attack.
The Assistant Inspector-General of Police in charge of the Special Operation in Kogi State, AIG Alonyenu F. Idu, who alongside the Commissioner of Police, Kogi State Command, CP Naziru Bello Kankarofi, visited the base for an on-the-spot assessment commended the officers for their bravery and urged them to remain vigilant and professional.
The Police reassured residents of Obajana and surrounding communities that security operations would be intensified until all criminal groups are dismantled.
Members of the public were also urged to provide useful information and report any suspicious movements to the nearest law enforcement agency.
