The Commissioner for the Ministry of Environment and Natural Resources, Dr. Margaret Elayo has called on educational authorities to incorporate climate change debates into the school curriculum with a view to enhancing students’ understanding of the negative impacts of climate change on the ecosystem.
Dr. Elayo made these remarks during an awareness event held at Government Science School in Lafia, as part of activities to commemorate World Environment Day 2026 on Monday.

According to Dr. Elayo, Nigeria has been facing significant climate challenges characterized by rising temperatures, unpredictable rainfall, extreme weather events, desertification, sea-level rise, flooding, land degradation, and biodiversity loss.
While speaking to the students, she stressed that the primary causes of climate change in the country are anthropogenic, stemming from harmful practices that disrupt the ecosystem.
“The environment doesn’t need us; we need the environment. As students, you should cultivate the habit of keeping your school premises clean without waiting for your teachers to remind you,” Dr. Elayo stated.
The Commissioner urged educational authorities at all levels to integrate climate change discussions into the curriculum to foster a generation that values and actively works toward environmental conservation. (VON)
