Academics Staff Union of Universities,ASUU Nasarawa State University Keffi branch says it has concluded plans to embark on indefinite strike by February 2022 if the state government fails to pay over 900 million Naira outstanding Earned Academic Allowance owed its members.

ASUU Chairman of the University, Dr. Samuel Alu who stated this during a news briefing in Keffi, Nasarawa State said the arrears were due to failure of the state government to implement the Memoranda of Action it signed with the union in 2016.

Dr. Samuel Alu explained that they had ran out of patience to ensure that the state government honoured its promises and the union was left with no other option than to down tools.

“By the ongoing attitude of government to the MoAs and MoUs, ASUU NSUK can no longer guarantee industrial harmony if the situations do no not improve.

“It is worthy to put straight on record that within 20 years of NSUK existence, ASUU NSUK has had only one unfortunate industrial action in 2016. This indicate that the union in the branch has demonstrated enough maturity, commitment to duty, tolerance, and patience which should not be taken for a weakness.

“Therefore, the general populace especially, stakeholders, parents and students of NSUK should hold the government and university administration responsible for the consequences that may arise from the non implementation of the MoA,” he said.

Dr. Alu identified poor funding, non mainstreaming the workload of academic staff , downward review of high tax regime as some of the challenges facing members of ASUU in the university over the years pointing out that the only way to guarantee industrial harmony is for the state government to take urgent steps towards addressing the issues.

“In the next available NEC meeting which is going to be around the first two weeks of February 2022, we are most likely to get the mandate to down tools.

“As we speak, there has been a motion on ground to proceed on total, definite and comprehensive strike action and that will come soon because we have taken all the necessary steps we are supposed to take to avert this strike action but to no avail,” he said.
