Benue State Government is to establish a five hundred hectre international food basket market near Makurdi Local Government to facilitate marketing of farm produce in the state.
Governor Samuel Ortom made this known when the National officials of Yam Farmers, Processors and Marketers Association paid a courtesy call at Government House, Makurdi.
Governor Ortom who said the decision to establish the market has already been approved by the state executive council stated that the process for the acquisition of land for the market has reached advanced stage.
He explained that the market would be well structured to contain ware houses, banks, parking space for all kinds of vehicles and hotel accommodations.
Mr. Ortom noted that the state Government would liaise with the Yam Farmers Association to get credible investors to take over the Katsina Ala yam factory for it to start production of yam flour.
The Governor also promised to support the association to carry out its programme of developing the value chain in yam production and called on other stakeholders agricultural sector to develop the passion necessary for its growth.
National President Yam Farmers, Processors and Marketers Association, Professor Simon Irtwange appealed to the state Government to revitalised the Katsina Ala yam factory which he said has the capacity to produce sixty metric tones of yam flour.
Professor Irtwange commended the Government for enacting the open grazing prohibition and ranches establishment law, saying with the law, yam farms are no longer being destroyed by cows there by increasing the output of yam farmers.
