CBN Set to Engage POS Operators for the Issuance of New Naira Notes

Following complaints by Nigerians of inadequate supply of the redesigned naira notes in banks and in circulation ,the Central Bank of Nigeria CBN says plans have been concluded to engage services of major POS operators across the country to commence issuance of the new naira notes as deadline for deposit of the old currency approaches.

Governor of the central bank, Godwin Emefiele announced this at the end of a three day sensitisation campaign in lafia the Nasarawa capital.

Represented by the Director security services ,Atiku Mohammad, the CBN governor said the measure was aimed at making accessible deposit points for the old notes and recieving the new ones immediately as well as reaching out to the rural populace that are yet to open an account .

According to Mr Emefiele ,CBN had distributed enough new notes to banks to issue to customers

Mr Emefiele also reiterated that there was no going back on the 31 of January deadline for deposit of the old naira notes inspite of calls for extention .

He reminded market women and men who are yet to open an account to do so without delay as the world is becoming Internet driven and cash money would sooner or later be regarded as old fashion and outdated.

CBN controller lafia branch,shehu Yakubu advised those without bank account to go and open one for easy business transaction .

He said henceforth no bank in Nasarawa State would complain of lack of redesigned new notes as it has been supplied with enough new ones..

Most of the marketers that spoke at the event appealed for extention of deadline for deposit of the old naira notes to enable those at rural areas to do so .

Meanwhile, the chairman Nasarawa State traditional council and Emir of Lafia retired justice Sidi Bagge has called on the Central Bank of Nigeria CBN to involve traditional rulers in the campaign to sensitise the people on the need to go and deposit the old 200,500 and 1000 naira notes before the expiry date at the end of January.

Justice Sidi Bagge made the call when a delegation from the CBN visited him in lafia to acquaint him of ongoing awareness campaign carried out by the bank in the state.

The Emir pointed out that involvement of the traditional rulers would go a long way in spreading the message to the target audience at the grassroots.

Justice Sidi Bagge also commended the CBN in their efforts to bring sanity to the economy and ensure development of the of the country.

Leader of the CBN delegation and Director of security services ,Atiku Mohammad said goal of the apex bank was to ensure that the rural populace and small scale traders to go and deposit the old denominations before the thirty first of this month.

Atiku Mohammad emphasised that those that fail to deposit the old notes after the deadline would have themselves to blame.

Both parties therefore agreed for a meeting in the middle of the week with all traditional rulers in the state to inform them on how to go and convey the message to their subjects in their various domains across the state. ..
