Director-General, Progressives Governors’ Forum, PGF, Dr. Salihu Lukman has described as unfair, smuggling of the controversial clause on direct primaries into the Electoral Act Amendment Bill.
Dr. Lukman said the insertion of the clause by the All Progressives Congress, APC, was an afterthought and was never in the original Bill.
The APC Chieftain who made the allegation in a statement in Abuja, entitled, ‘Internal Party Democracy and Politics of Candidates’ Nomination’ wondered why the APC members in the National Assembly were pushing for it.
Dr. Lukman appealed to the leadership of the National Assembly to provide the needed direction for the country to have the right legal framework, which can guarantee the administration of direct primaries by political parties in the country.
He observed that the proposal passed by the two chambers of the National Assembly on November 9, 2021, was highly inadequate and left more room for manipulation, which he alleged might produce more disaster for the country.
Dr. Lukman said the issue was a very sensitive one which no Standing Order of the National Assembly should be used to block the democratic rights of Nigerians in contributing to the law.
