One hundred and fifty rice farmers across the twenty-three Local Government Areas today took delivery of inputs support provided by the Federal Ministry of Agriculture and Rural Development, FMARD, in collaboration with Japan International Cooperation, JICA.
At the event, each farmer received fifty Kg of certified seeds, four bags of NPK fertilizer, two bags of Urea, one litre of soil amender, four litres of pesticide and five litres of pre/ post emergence herbicides
The Minister of Agriculture and Rural Development, Mr Mohammed Nanono said the aim was to alleviate the impact the COVID-nineteen pandemic and flood on farmers.
Represented by Mr Samuel Ameh, the Minister maintained that the inputs would enhance food security and increase farmers income.
Director Federal Ministry of Agriculture and Rural Development Makurdi, Dr Thompson Abi noted that each farmer was expected to cultivate not less than one hectare of farm land with the incentive.
He advised them not to sell the products to motivate the Nigerian and Japanese Governments to do more warning that already mechanism has been put in place to monitor and deal decisively with any farmer who diverts or sell the items.
Speaking on behalf of the beneficiaries, Mrs Esther Ajoko thanked the Federal Government for identifying with rural farmers and promised that they would use the items judiciously.
Correspondent Ene Ohaba reports that the exercise was carried out in ten states simultaneously with one thousand, five hundred farmers in the country benefitting from the gesture.
