A  news website NAIJA LIVE TV on the 7th of July published a story with the headline; ’’BREAKING: Tension as Jonathan Finally Dumps PDP” to paint a picture that former Nigerian President, Goodluck Jonathan had defected.

Dr. Goodluck Jonathan was Nigeria’s president from 2010 to 2015.

In November 2020, Governors under the All Progressives Congress (APC) held a private meeting with the former president in Abuja with no member of the PDP present at the meeting.

Since that meeting, there had been rumours that Dr. Jonathan might defect to the APC. This is borne out of the fact that the reason for the meeting was not disclosed, but it was reported that it was connected to the forthcoming 2023 presidential election.

It was amidst all these that NAIJA LIVE TV published the story with the headline. The story for some days after publishing had only the headline without a body, easily leading readers to believe it was the well-known Goodluck Jonathan. A few days later, the story was updated to include the name of the said Jonathan that defected.

The story generated varied reactions and was shared on many social media platforms, especially WhatsApp.
