Benue State Governor, Samuel Ortom wants the Federal Government to fast track the implementation of financial autonomy for the judicial and legislative arms of Government through direct allocation from the federation account.
Governor Ortom made this known when he received the chairman of Nigeria Bar Association, NBA Makurdi branch, Mr. Justine Gbagir led other members in Makurdi.
He stressed the need for the leadership of the legislative and judicial arms of each state and the Nigeria Governors Forum to meet with the Federal Government to work out modalities for the implementation.
Governor Ortom said that a committee was set up in the state to look at the implementation process.
The Governor appealed to the Judicial Staff Union of Nigeria, JUSUN who are currently on strike as a result of non-implementation of financial autonomy of the Judiciary to suspend the industrial action in the interest of the people.
Chairman Nigeria Bar Association, NBA Makurdi branch, Mr. Justine Gbagir said that the visit was at the instance of the National President of NBA who requested the various state chapters to meet with the Governors to chart the way forward.
Mr. Gbagir stressed the importance of financial autonomy to the development of the Judicial arm of Government pointed out that in six years, the three entities of the arm, received only fourteen million naira as capital release from the State Government which is grossly inadequate.
The NBA Makurdi branch chairman, appealed to Governor Ortom and his colleagues to implement the financial autonomy without delay to enable JUSUN end their industrial action which was already taken a toll on the people.
