Maritime agencies in the country have once again expressed determination to put to effective use the nation’s water ways.

This was part of resolutions of heads of the nation’s maritime agencies at its third monthly meeting held at the National Inland Waterways, NIWA, headquarters in Lokoja, Kogi State Capital.

Breifing newsmen after the meeting, Managing Director of NIWA, Doctor George Moghalu, said chief executives of the agencies discussed issues relating to maritime security and safety, capacity building and how to evolve policies to better the maritime industry.

He explained that the body was also looking for better ways to harmonise all maritime operations for the benefit of Nigerians.

Doctor Moghalu blamed incessant boat mishaps in the country on non compliance with standards laid down by NIWA.

The NIWA, MD, maintained that the maritime agencies would continue to enforce all protocols so that the nation can maximise the benefit of the maritime industry and reduce pressure on roads.
