One Hundred and Thirteen Rural Farmers in Benue given Seeds, Fertilizer and Herbicides

One hundred and thirteen rural farmers from seven local government areas in Benue State have been given certified seeds, NPK/Urea fertilizers and herbicides by the Federal Government/International Fund for Agricultural Development Value Chain Program in collaboration with the Federal Ministry of Agriculture and Rural Development.

The benefiting farmers are from Agatu, Logo, Kwande, Gwer East, Gwer West, Okpkwu and Guma local government areas.

At the flag off held at BNARDA office Makurdi, the acting National Program Coordinator, Federal Government of Nigeria IFAD Value Chain Development Program, Dr Fatima Aliyu said the geture was to improve the incomes and food security of poor rural household farmers engaged in the production, processing and marketing of rice and casava on a sustainable basis.

Represented by the National Procurement Advisor, Mr Baba Yakubu, Dr Aliyu stated that the beneficiaries would also receive training on good agronomic practices, farm management and smart agriculture inorder to have better yeilds.

State Coordinator, IFAD, Mr Emmanuel Igbaukum disclosed that the program has produce two hundred millionaire farners in the state who are now employers of labour and appealed to the beneficiaries to make judicious use of their inputs to achieve same success.

Mr Igbaukum who pointed out that two thousand, seven hundred and ninety three farmers will be benefiting from this programe across different state noted that another set of farmers in the state will be accorded same gesture next month.

Commissioner for Agriculture and Natural Resources, Dr Kester Kyenge called for the scaling up of the value chain program to include more women and youths who are major players in the sector and lamented the setback insecurity has caused on farmers.

Msurshima Akimbo thanked the Federal Government for coming to their aid and promised to return to the farms to ensure food security.
