President Muhammadu Buhari will tomorrow, Thursday 15th July perform the groundbreaking ceremony of the $1.2bn Kano—Kaduna standard gauge railway project.
The event will be performed at Dawakin Kudu Local Government Area of Kano State at 10’o clock in the morning.
The project which is an extension of the Abuja-Kaduna railway is to be funded from the budgetary provision of the Ministry of Transportation.
Already, $218 million needed for the project has been given to the contractors, China Civil Engineering Construction Corporation (CCECC), while an additional $100 million is expected to be paid to them soon.
Minister of Transportation, Mr. Rotimi Amaechi who disclosed this two weeks ago said the fact that the railway project would not only boost trade between Nigeria and other ECOWAS countries but create massive employment opportunities for Nigerians.
According to him, it is also a segment of the Kano Maradi rail line, with Kano been the major hub of business activities in that axis.
The project is another milestone aimed at keeping with the President’s mandate of connecting all state capitals by rail and to seaports to facilitate import and export activities.
Top government functionaries are expected at the event.
