Saudi Arabia to host 2023 FIFA Club world cup

FIFA have chosen Saudi Arabia to host the next Club World Cup for the first time, coming up from 12 to 22 of December, 2023.

The announcement comes four days after Real Madrid lifted the trophy in Morocco, following a thrilling 5-3 win over Saudi club Al-Hilal, the first Arab side to reach the final of the tournament.

Saudi Arabia will only be the sixth host since the competition was first played in 2000.

The oil-rich Gulf (Arab) nation has invested heavily in sporting events in recent years, but has been accused of using events to “sportswash” its reputation.

FIFA plans to change the format of the tournament from June, 2025, to feature 32 teams, and to be held every four years, with 12 teams from Europe involved.

It is understood the FIFA Council agreed unanimously to support Saudi Arabia’s proposal to host the tournament with no other confederation chiefs raising concerns.
