Ahead of commencement of athletics events slated for Tuesday in the ongoing 9th National Youth Games in Asaba, coaches have intensified training of their athletes at the main bowl of the Stephen Keshi Stadium Asab, Edo State.
Some athletes from Edo and Niger states who were seen training for the crowd pulling event, said they would give their best to win medals for their states.
One of the athletes from Niger State , and last year winner of 800 metres race, Abubakar Rabiu Tanimu stated that he was ready to defend the title.
”I am from Niger State. I am running 400 and 800 metres. I am ready for my events . I have prepared based on my successful training. I wish to deliver two gold medals for Niger State; that is what I promised my coach”, Rabiu stated.
Other athletes expressed their readiness to compete in 100 metres, 200 metres, 400 metres and 800 metres race.
Meanwhile, Edo State athletics coach, Abdul Wasiu Mustapha has expressed optimism that his athletes in field and track events will perform well following the intensive training they are being exposed to.
He noted that Edo State has 28 athletes for field and track events, and that he is expecting at least ten gold medals.
