Media professionals, Civil Society Organisations, and other stakeholders have been urged to partner with the National Agency for the Prohibition of Trafficking in Persons, NAPTIP, to combat the evolving trends of Human Trafficking that is ravaging society.
Director General of NAPTIP, Mrs. Binta Bello made the appeal during a three day media training on Communication, Monitoring and Evaluation held in Benin, Edo state organized by the Agency in collaboration with International Centre for Migration Policy Development, ICMPD.
Represented by the Zonal Commander, Benin Zonal Command, Sam Offiah, Mrs. Bello emphasized the need for strengthening of ethical standards as partners in the fight against human trafficking, noting the critical role of Journalists as torchbearers and opinion shapers in Society.
Project Manager, ICMPD, Mrs Rhoda Diajohnson, who stressed the importance of the media training, said it was to equip Journalists with the required knowledge on ethical reporting of Human Trafficking and Irregular Migration.
She assured that the implementation of the project on Schools Anti trafficking Education and Advocacy Project, STEAP would soon be carried out in Benue, Enugu, Edo, Delta, and Ogun State to create awareness on the dangers associated with Trafficking of women and Children to mitigate its ugly effects on the victims.
NAPTIP Zonal Commander, Mrs. Gloria Bai, of the Makurdi Zonal Command, challenged the media to go beyond sensational reporting and use their platforms to create awareness, informing the people on how to prevent human trafficking.
Some of the participants, including Oluwatoyin Adegoke of Radio Nigeria Paramount FM Abeokuta, Simbiat Agbaji of NTA Makurdi, and Emmanuel Antswen of the News Agency of Nigeria, said the training has equipped them with the basic tools to write credible reports that can drive the needed change.
