The Federal University Lokoja (FUL) has inaugurated a Centre for Climate Change, Flood, and Environmental Sustainability, aimed at addressing the pressing challenges of climate change and promoting sustainable solutions.
Vice Chancellor, Federal University Lokoja, Professor. Olayemi Akinwumi, who disclosed this during the ceremony, noted that climate change and environmental degradation pose significant threats to the planet.
He explained that Lokoja, located at the confluence of Rivers Niger and Benue, has experienced the devastating effects of flooding and other environmental challenges, making it imperative for the University to take proactive steps.
Professor. Akinwumi said the establishment of the Centre reflects FUL’s commitment not only to studying climate change but also to pioneering evidence-based, community-driven solutions that safeguard lives and secure the future.
The Director of the Centre, Emeritus Professor Jimmy Adegoke, expressed appreciation to stakeholders whose support made the initiative possible.
He emphasized that climate change impacts every sector of the economy, and lauded Governor Ahmed Usman Ododo for establishing the Kogi State Climate Change Agency and appointing a Special Adviser on Climate Change.
In a goodwill message, the Commissioner for Environment, Mr Joseph Oluwasegun, represented by the Permanent Secretary, Haruna Jibo, described the Centre as a timely intervention.
He added that it would play a crucial role in building climate resilience, promoting sustainable development, and strengthening environmental protection in the region.
