The leadership of the Peoples Democratic Party PDP, has called on its members, especially those serving on various committees, ahead of the party’s National Convention in Ibadan, to demonstrate commitment and professionalism to ensure a smooth and successful exercise scheduled for November 15th and 16th.
At the inaugural meeting of the Security and Intelligence Subcommittee in Abuja, the Chairman of the committee and Governor og Taraba state, Retired Colonel Agbu Kefas, commended members for their dedication and willingness to serve despite logistical challenges.
Represented by the Vice Chairman of the Committee, retired Colonel Austin Akobundu, explained that the subcommittee comprised experienced professionals, including retired generals, officers from the Department of State Services, the Police, and administrative experts, all charged with creating a strong security framework for the upcoming convention.
He outlined the subcommittee’s key responsibilities, which include ensuring perimeter security, intelligence gathering, and effective coordination with relevant security agencies.
According to him, the expertise of members with security backgrounds will be critical in designing comprehensive security programmes and assigning specific operational roles.
Also, the Deputy Chairman of the National Convention Organising Committee, Tanimu Turaki, assured the subcommittee of the full support of the party’s leadership.
He expressed confidence that with the level of commitment already displayed, the PDP would deliver a convention that would serve as a benchmark for other political parties in the country.
On his part, the Party’s National Publicity Secretary, Debo Ologunagba, emphasized the importance of the forthcoming National Convention to Nigeria’s democracy.
He said the convention represented a vital moment for the PDP and the nation, given the widespread public interest and the party’s role in shaping the country’s democratic journey.
Ologunagba recalled what he described as the PDP’s “glorious era” in governance, highlighting the nation’s economic growth, debt repayment, and global recognition under the party’s leadership.
He noted that Nigeria’s economy thrived under the PDP, achieving double-digit GDP growth, controlling inflation, and becoming Africa’s number one economy with over 600 billion dollars in value before 2015.
He decried that much of that progress had been eroded in the past decade under the ruling APC, adding that Nigerians remained hopeful for a return to stability and progress under the PDP.
Ologunagba further stressed that the PDP remained a truly democratic institution — open to dialogue, accountability, and diverse opinions — describing these values as the essence of democracy.
He added that the forthcoming convention would not only produce new national officers for the next four years but also set the stage for the party’s preparations toward the 2027 general elections.
