The Nasarawa State Ministry of Environment and Natural Resources has committed to partnering with women and persons with disabilities in climate change disaster preparedness and response.
Commissioner of the Ministry, Princess Margaret Elayo, made this commitment during an advocacy visit organized by Beacon Youths Initiative in collaboration with Education as a Vaccine, under the African Activists for Climate Justice Project in Lafia.
Represented by Director of Administration and Supply, Mr. Musa Mohammed Aboki, Princess Elayo emphasized the importance of including women, young girls, and persons with disabilities in climate change decision-making processes to ensure effective and sustainable solutions.
She commended the organizers and assured that women would be actively involved in shaping climate policies, especially those affecting vulnerable communities across the state.
As part of the advocacy effort, the delegation also visited the Ministries of Science, Technology, and Innovation; Youth and Sports Development; and Women Affairs and Humanitarian Services where Permanent Secretaries: Mrs Atinuke Chammang, Doctor Ibrahim Alhassan, and Pharmacist Emmanuel Yonah highlighted the value of collaboration between government agencies and civil society organizations in promoting inclusive and sustainable environmental management.
Executive Director of Beacon Youths Initiative, Mr Emmanuel Envoh Okolo, presented a study assessing the social vulnerabilities of local communities in Nasarawa State.
The study underscores the need to engage women, including those with disabilities, in climate decision-making to harness their environmental knowledge and strengthen community resilience and adaptation strategies.
