In a bid to enhance flood preparedness and response, the Nigerian Red Cross Society (NRCS) has announced plans to conduct a flood simulation exercise focusing on early warning and early action in six communities across three Local Government Areas of Kogi State.
Disclosing this during a stakeholders’ engagement meeting on flood preparedness and disaster response in Lokoja, the Disaster Management Officer of the NRCS, Mrs. Charity Nwuoha, said the initiative aims to build community resilience and reduce the impact of flooding on lives and livelihoods.
According to Mrs. Nwuoha, the engagement brought together key stakeholders in emergency response to sensitize flood-prone communities on proactive measures to take before, during, and after flood incidents.
She explained that Kogi State was selected for the exercise by the International Federation of Red Cross and Red Crescent Societies (IFRC) due to its high vulnerability to annual flooding.
The Disaster Management Officer urged community leaders to mobilize residents to participate actively in the forthcoming simulation exercise, noting that it would help them better understand flood risks, early warning systems, and appropriate response actions.
In a goodwill message, the Special Adviser to the Governor on Emergency Management, Alhaji Muhammed Shuaibu, noted that the state has consistently demonstrated readiness in handling emergencies during the rainy season.
Also speaking, the Executive Secretary of the Kogi State Emergency Management Agency (SEMA), Alhaji Muktar Attima, expressed appreciation to the Nigerian Red Cross Society for organizing the workshop.
He assured of SEMA’s continued collaboration and support to strengthen disaster management and emergency response in the state.
