The Kwara State House of Assembly has called on the state government to intensify efforts to stop students from engaging in street hawking while wearing school uniforms during official learning hours.
The resolution followed a motion moved by Hon. Mariam Yusuf Aladi, representing Ilorin South, on the need to curb the practice.
Aladi described the act as a form of child abuse and a violation of the Child Rights Law, stressing that school uniforms symbolize discipline and should not be misused.
Supporting the motion, other lawmakers warned that allowing students to hawk during school hours could jeopardize their future and undermine the government’s heavy investment in the education sector.
The House urged the government to adopt stronger measures beyond existing ones, including tackling truancy and establishing a technical enforcement team through the Office of the Secretary to the State Government, in collaboration with the Ministry of Education and the State Universal Basic Education Board, SUBEB.
It also tasked the Ministry of Communications to embark on sensitization campaigns to discourage parents from engaging their children in hawking while in school uniforms.
