The Academic Staff Union of Secondary Schools (ASUSS), Kogi State chapter, has appealed to Governor Ahmed Usman Ododo to recruit additional teachers to complement the number approved for employment by the previous administration.
The State Chairman of ASUSS, Comrade Emejeh Ogwu Sunday, appealed in Lokoja during the celebration of the 2025 World Teachers’ Day, themed “Recasting Teaching as a Collaborative Profession.”
Comrade Emejeh lamented that public secondary schools across the state continue to face acute shortages of teachers due to deaths, retirements, and migration of teachers to better opportunities elsewhere.
He urged the state government to address pending issues affecting teachers’ welfare, including the implementation of outstanding promotions, payment of annual incremental arrears, and settlement of pension and gratuity backlogs for retirees.
While commending the Ododo administration for upgrading some secondary schools to model status, the ASUSS chairman noted that over ninety percent of public secondary schools in the state remain in a dilapidated condition and require urgent attention.
In their goodwill messages, the Chairmen of the Nigeria Labour Congress (NLC), Comrade Gabriel Amari; the Trade Union Congress (TUC), Comrade Sule Ahmed Tijani; and the Kogi State Senior Secondary Education Board, Doctor. Habibat Suleiman called on the government to prioritize the welfare of teachers.
They also lauded teachers across the state for their commitment and resilience, urging them to continue contributing meaningfully to the development of the education sector as they celebrate this year’s World Teachers’ Day.
