Kogi State Governor, Alhaji Usman Ododo, has flagged off the maiden edition of the Kogi Half Marathon 2026, describing it as a strategic initiative to promote physical fitness, foster unity, and steer young people away from crime and social vices.
The marathon, which commenced at the Felele Bus Stop in Lokoja, the state capital, attracted youths, athletes, and sports enthusiasts from across the state.
Flagging off the event, Governor Ododo said the marathon was deliberately designed to engage youths positively, strengthen social cohesion, and contribute to sustainable peacebuilding in Kogi State.

According to the governor, sports remains a powerful tool for youth development, social integration, and crime prevention.
He assured participants and stakeholders that the Kogi Half Marathon would be sustained and expanded in subsequent years as part of his administration’s commitment to youth empowerment and healthy living.

Governor Ododo also expressed appreciation to key stakeholders, including the Speaker of the Kogi State House of Assembly, members of the State Executive Council, security agencies, and local government authorities, for their collective roles in ensuring a peaceful and successful event.
In his remarks, the State Commissioner for Youths and Sports Development, Mr. Monday Anyebe, commended the governor for creating an enabling environment for sports and youth development in the state.

He noted that the marathon reflects the administration’s resolve to leverage sports as a vehicle for empowerment, healthy lifestyles, and social cohesion across the state.
