Nasarawa State Government says it will continue to strengthen collaboration with development partners to reposition waste management across the state.
Commissioner for Environment and Natural Resources, Princess Margaret Elayo, made this known at a validation meeting for stakeholders including persons with disability on the draft Nasarawa State Waste Management Policy in Lafia.
The Commissioner said, the state government is working tirelessly to reposition its waste management system.
Princess Margaret Elayo represented by the Permanent Secretary, Yahaya Yakubu Ede noted that the ministry would partner relevant organisations to strengthen waste management across the state.
National Co-ordinator, United Nations Development Programme, GEF Small Grant Programme, Dr Ibironke Olubamise explained that the workshop was organized to harness biowaste value for climate-smart agricultural production and sustainable livelihoods.
She noted that waste management policy is essential for creating wealth and protecting the environment from degradation, called for increased awareness and capacity building for residence of the state.
Also speaking, the Executive Director of Global Initiative for Food Security and Ecosystem Preservation, Doctor Michael Terungwa David emphasized the need for government at all levels and other relevant stakeholders to play a role in ensuring proper waste management and creating wealth for the benefit of the state.
Doctor Terungwa expressed the Global Initiative for Food Security and Ecosystem Preservation’s commitment to ensuring that a waste management policy is adopted and put into practice in Nasarawa State.
In their goodwill messages, the Permanent Secretary office of the State’s Head of Service, Mrs Atunike Chammang, the representative of the Director General, Nasarawa State Waste Management and Sanitation Authority, Mr Joseph David Anzaku; the Executive Chairman of Nasarawa State Disabilities Rights Commission, Mr Saleh Barde Keana; and a representative of the Ministry of Justice, Mr. Adole Bello commended development partners for the initiative, pledging unreserved support toward repositioning the state’s waste management policy.
The validation workshop on the Draft Nasarawa State Waste Management Policy with the theme “Waste to Wealth: Building Effective, Sustainable, and Inclusive Waste Management Systems for Nasarawa State, organized by the Global Initiative for Food Security and Ecosystem Preservation in collaboration with the United Nations Development Program and the Global Environment Facility featured presentation of the validation framework to the participants.
