Bringing you the trends shaping conversations across Nigeria’s social media space!
Security concerns, governance decisions, international policy changes are driving conversations online as Nigerians react strongly to several trending stories.
Vice President Kashim Shettima is trending after calling for prayers following renewed cases of school kidnappings across the country. He spoke during a special Jumu’ah prayer session, referencing recent abductions involving pupils and teachers in parts of Oyo and Borno States. While government officials insist efforts are ongoing to rescue victims and restore peace, online reactions are sharply divided. Some Netizens said faith and unity are important in difficult times, while others criticized the focus on prayers instead of stronger security action, with comment like “We need action, not just prayers anymore.”
In Oyo State, Governor Seyi Makinde has also sparked discussion after banning nighttime commercial motorcycle operations following the recent school abductions in Oriire Local Government Area. The new directive restricts okada operations between 10:30 p.m. and 5:30 a.m. While authorities say the move is aimed at improving security and tracking suspects, reactions online remain mixed. Some residents welcomed it as a necessary step, others complained it could affect movement and nighttime livelihoods, with users warning it may create hardship for workers who depend on late-night transport.
Meanwhile in Nollywood and Action Alliance Congress, AAC Governonship Candidate in Abia state actress Doris Ogala trended after reportedly collapsing during consultation. She was rushed to the Federal Medical Centre in Umuahia. Reports also say she later paid hospital bills for some indigent patients, an act that drew praise online, with supporters applauding her generosity and resilience, while critics questioned the timing of the gesture, saying it’s politically motivated.
Another moment generating strong reactions online is Asisat Oshoala’s message after scoring the Super Falcons’ opening goal against Senegal. Rather than simply celebrating, the Nigerian striker lifted a shirt carrying the messages “Save the Teachers” and “Bring Back Our Children,” drawing attention to the recent wave of school kidnappings across the country.
The gesture quickly went viral, with many Nigerians praising Oshoala for using her platform to highlight a national issue.
Internationally, Nigerians are also reacting to new immigration rules introduced by the United Kingdom Home Office, which could affect universities recruiting foreign students. The announcement has sparked concern among Nigerian students and families, with many online expressing fear about reduced opportunities abroad. Others argue the move is part of broader global tightening of immigration systems, advising students to prepare for tougher requirements.
