Four members of the Benue State House of Assembly have been suspended from legislative duties for a period of three months for trying to cause chaos in the House by attempting to install a new speaker.
The suspended members are, Alfred Emberga of Makurdi North, Cyril Ikong of Oju-two, Emmanuel Shimawua of Kyan constituency of Vandeikya and Abu Umoru of Apa.
Moving a motion for their suspension, Majority leader, Saater Tiseer said their action is detrimental to the peaceful coexistence of the House and should not be tolerated.
Chief Whip, Peter Ipusu wondered why a member of the House leadership would be nursing ambition of becoming speaker when there is no problem, while Elias Audu of Gwer East constituency said the House must be allowed to carry out its duties unhindered and condemned the action of non state actors who are trying to intimidate the speaker.
After ruling on the matter, the speaker Aondona Dajoh directed the sergeant at arms to move the suspended lawmakers out of the chamber and dissolved all standing committees of the House.
Mr Dajoh appointed Elias Audu as spokesperson of the House, Douglas Akya Deputy Chief Whip and Kennedy Angbo deputy majority leader.
Before adjourning plenary, the speaker who expressed displeasure with the noisy atmosphere within the complex by large influx of people , directed the clerk to write to the Commissioner of police and State Director of DSS to beef up security within the premises at next sitting on Tuesday.
