The State Universal Basic Education Board, SUBEB in collaboration with Universal Basic Education Commission, UBEC today launched the training of the School Based Management Committee, SBMC and installation of a new state executive to oversee its affairs.
The six day training programme is to hold simultaneously in the three senatorial zones of the state.
Executive Chairman of SUBEB, Doctor Grace Adagba said the SBMC initiative is to ensure that education is not left to the government alone, but becomes the collective responsibility of parents, traditional institutions, faith-based organizations, community leaders and relevant stakeholders.
Dr. Adagba emphasised that when communities actively participate in the management of their schools, they consistently record better learning outcomes, greater accountability, improved school governance and stronger public confidence in education.
She stated that the SBMC training was coming at a defining moment in the basic education sector, following the launch of project BRACE-UP early in the year with a target of ensuring that every child of school age is enrolled, retained and supported to complete basic education.
Doctor Adagba noted that the training has also been carefully designed to equip the committee members with the practical knowledge to discharge their responsibilities and urged them to mobilize parents, traditional rulers and stakeholders to safeguard school infrastructure against theft and vandalism.
Commissioner for Education and knowledge management, Doctor Margaret Adamu maintained that the training was deliberate policy by the government, aimed at restoring confidence in public education and ensuring that every child enjoys the constitutional right to quality basic education.
In goodwill messages, zonal coordinator of UBEC, Edward Ablaka, Chairman, House standing committee on education, Elias Audu and the Chairman of Otukpo local government council, Maxwell Ogiri lauded the SUBEB management board for the SBMC training
The new state EXCO chairman of SBMC Esther Iorber on behalf of committee members thanked the SUBEB board for the confidence in them to pilot its affairs and sued for collaboration and support to enable them to deliver on their task.
