The Kwara State House of Assembly has urged Governor AbdulRahman AbdulRazaq to direct the Ministry of Agriculture to embark on an awareness campaign on the dangers of planting Genetically Modified Organisms (GMO) seeds, particularly their effects on human health and the environment.
The resolution followed a motion on the need to discourage farmers from planting GMO seeds to enhance food security in the state. The motion was moved by Alhaji Mohammed Kareem Musa, representing Patigi Constituency.
Leading the debate, Alhaji Musa noted that the consumption of genetically engineered foods could have a negative impact on biodiversity and traditional farming practices.
He called on agricultural extension workers to revive their responsibilities by sensitizing farmers against embracing GMO seeds.
Other lawmakers who contributed to the debate noted that while GMO seeds are gaining global attention, their spread should not be allowed in the state.
In his ruling, Speaker Yakubu Danladi-Salihu directed all the sixteen local government council chairmen to educate farmers on the dangers inherent in planting GMO seeds.
Earlier at plenary, the House received the report of the Auditor-General for Local Governments on the twenty twenty-four accounts of the sixteen local government councils as well as the Ministry of Local Government and Chieftaincy Affairs.
The report, presented by the Deputy Leader, Hajia AbdulRaheem Medinat Motunrayo, was subsequently referred to the Committee on Public Accounts for further legislative action.
