The Benue State University Teaching Hospital Cares Foundation and Ishk Tolaram Foundation, Lagos have provided three hundred and thirty artificial limbs to amputees captured for the humanitarian programme.
Chief Medical Director of the hospital, Dr. Stephen Hwande who spoke at the commencement of the fittings of the limbs said they are for both the lower and upper arms and are being given free of charge to the amputees.
Dr. Hwande described the humanitarian gesture as the most notable achievement of his work at BSUTH and expressed appreciation to Governor Hyacinth Alia for giving him the needed support to lift the hospital to the standard where it can compete with any teaching hospital in the country.
Commissioner for Women Affairs and Social Welfare, Theresa Ikwue, represented by Mrs. Dorathy Wergba and the Coordinator, Office of the First Lady, Mrs. Scholastica Ben-Sor assured that the state Government would work and expand programmes that empower the vulnerable and people with disabilities.
Office Manager, Ishk Tolaram Foundation, Mr. Omotoyesi Adelaja who said the mandate of the foundation was to develop and support programmes that improve quality of life expressed hope that the limbs would restore mobility, independence and confidence of the amputees.
The Coordinator, BSUTH Cares Foundation, Mrs. Ejiro Egwuda said she was happy to see the dreams of the foundation to give hope to those who had lost it materialised and enjoined the beneficiaries to collaborate with the team to ensure a successful fitting of the limbs.
Some of the beneficiaries including, Micheal Washima, Juliana Ogbole and Dorcas Yimba thanked BSUTH Cares and Ishk Tolaram Foundations for giving them the opportunity to use their legs and hands like normal individuals.
