The National Human rights Commission has emphasised the need for a multi-sectoral approach to effectively promote and protect fundamental freedom and rights of people.
The Executive SECRETARY of the Commission, Dr. Tony Ojukwu stressed this during a walk to commemorate this year’s International Human Rights Day.
The International Human Rights Day is observed every December 10th to commemorate the adoption of the Universal Declaration of Human Rights by the United Nations General Assembly in 1948.
The celebration in Jos the Plateau state capital, was marked by a walk from Miango Junction to Zarmaganda roundabout with key stakeholders participating and raising awareness on human rights, while trumpeters and drummers boosted moral for the procession.

The Executive Secretary, National Human rights Commission Dr. TONY OJUKWU represented by the Plateau state Coordinator, Kyenpiya Mafuyai while calling for collective efforts to fight against human rights abuses, noted that the commission remains committed to fulfilling it’s mandate of promoting and protecting human rights despite challenges.
Plateau state Commissioner for Women Affairs and Social Development, Mrs. Caroline Dafur emphasized that promotion of human dignity Remains the priority of the government , as such will continue to partner stakeholders to ensure human rights protection.
Chairperson of the Plateau State Gender and Equal Opportunities Commission, Mrs. Olivia Dazyem appreciated the crucial role the national human rights commission and other key stakeholders are playing in fighting human rights abuses and discrimination in the state.

This year’s theme for the the International Human Rights Day is Our Everyday Essentials,” focusing on how rights like dignity, equality, and justice are fundamental, positive, and attainable in daily life.
